Should I work on becoming a city police officer or county sheriff/ state trooper?
I really want to stay in a major city that's not to big, a city about the size of Tulsa, Albuquerque, Kansas City and other cities of that size. I also would like to know how county sheriff or state troopers operate in medium/large cities. So any ideas on what I should do? Thanks

Based on my experience, I really loved being with the city police. I worked in a more precise area day in and day out so I was able to become very familiar with the regulars and the area. My back up was closer when trouble started and there seemed to be less politics involved since the chief is hired and a sheriff is elected. (There is still SOME politics involved due to city officials and councils, etc.) My friends with Sheriffs dept and troopers had to cover a much much larger area and usually without any backup for 30-60 miles away. It seemed I was also able to learn many different aspects of the job with the city and promotion seemed quicker. A city police department is certainly my choice for starting out.

One good thing about being a city police officer is that your backup is about minutes or less away, which is nice.On the other hand if you don't want to be too overwhelmed, being a deputy sheriff would probably be best for you.State troopers operate mainly on the state's highways. They have jurisdiction of the whole state, although you don't see them going down city or county streets very often. If you like to focus on traffic, you would be best at state trooper or city police.State police make the most,if you are concerned with the pay. Hope this helps and good luck with your choice.
